Mini Thin Dental Implants

At Smile Arts of NY we believe in offering patient options when it comes to implant dentistry. Depending on your particular situation we may be able to restore missing teeth using thinner “mini-dental implants.”

These thin less invasive dental implants require least surgical intervention, there are no sutures and make teeth in an hour a reality.

Dr. Peter Mann explains the advantages of mini dental implants on the Dr. Steve Show.

Thin Dental Implants

Mini Dental Implants(MDIs) can be used for single tooth replacement, multiple tooth replacement and full arch replacement.

For the past decade, mini dental implants (MDIs) have been a growing trend in the dental field. Mini dental implants have made a lasting impression on both practitioners and patients alike. Finally, patients can regain the smile and confidence in half the time and for half the cost!

Mini dental implants are smaller in diameter than conventional implants. MDIs range in diameter size from 1.8mm to 2.9mm and have been approved by the FDA for long-term use. A leading study shows that over a 5 year period, out of 2,514 MDIs placed in 531 patients, 94.2% were successful.

An unsuccessful implant consisted of an implant loosening up in the bone. When this occurred the implant was simply removed and a new one was placed. The MDI procedures have now been highly refined, and following protocols currently in place, successful use of MDIs is able to be implemented in clinical practice. The success rates demonstrated in this study are comparable to that of studies conducted on conventional implants.

Dental implants can be used to replace missing teeth and restore debilitated mouths. At Smile Arts of NY, you don’t have to go to a different specialist for treatment. Both phases of implant dentistry are done under one roof: implant surgery and tooth replacement.

Dr. Mann’s goal is to improve not only your smile but your quality of life. He wants you to bite, chew and smile with the same confidence you had with your own natural teeth. Let our highly experienced team help you restore your smile to its youthful appearance and function.

What are Dental Implants?

mini implant vs dental implant

Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function just like natural teeth. No more need to deal with uncomfortable dentures or bridges. With dental implants, a person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat and smile.

Dr. Peter Mann is trained in using both conventional implants and thinner implants called mini dental implants (MDIs.) We believe in offering both options to our patients.

During your consultation both options will be discussed along with which option is better for your individual needs.

Why is Replacing Missing Teeth with Dental Implants Important?

Replacement of missing teeth is essential to maintaining the bone in the jaw. The longer a tooth is missing the more bone is lost in that site.

That is why a tooth should be replaced very soon after it is lost. Dental implants are man-made replacements for natural teeth.

The implants are made from titanium, the same metal that hip and other joint replacements are made from. The actual dental implant replaces the root of the missing tooth.

It is then used as an anchor to secure the replacement tooth or teeth. Implants allow us to replace missing teeth without harming the healthy natural teeth adjacent to the space. This reduces the future risk of root canals and decay under crowns. Over time, due to lack of use, more and more of the jaw bone disintegrates until it becomes very difficult to place an implant restoration.

Do I Need Dental Implants?

For one thing, quality of life is affected.

As teeth are lost, it becomes more difficult, over time, to eat and chew food. The jaw bone melts away with disuse. You may be surprised to learn that 29% of denture wearers eat only soft or mashed foods and 50% avoid many foods altogether.

Replacing teeth as soon as they are lost keeps the mouth in its optimal function so you will, hopefully, never have to mash your food! If you are missing one tooth or all of your teeth, implant dentistry might be right for you.

Thin dental implants can be placed in very narrow spaces

Spaces between teeth can sometimes be too small for conventional dental implants.  Often when replacing an upper lateral incisor or a lower incisors there just isn’t enough room for a conventional implant that’s 3.5 mm in diameter or larger.  In these situations a thinner dental implant is ideal to replace a missing tooth.

The patient to the right was using a Maryland bridge for 20 years because he was told he wasn’t a candidate for a dental implant.  The Maryland bridge eventually rotted out his canine which required a root canal to fix.  He agreed to try a thinner dental implant which worked out great.
