Dental Inlays, Onlays, & Crowns for Tooth Repair

When a dental filling just won’t do, dentists use a stronger custom made material to replace missing tooth structure.

Inlays, onlays, and crowns to replace portions of a tooth that may be missing due to cavities, fracture, root canal, or trauma. As dentists we understand that conserving tooth structure is important to the longevity of a tooth.

Our goal is for each of your teeth to last for as long as possible. Depending on the amount of tooth structure missing we can create custom tooth replacement parts in the form of Onlays, Inlays and tooth crowns.

What Are Inlays, Onlays, & Crowns Made From?

These custom pieces are made from Porcelain Zirconia. This substance is extremely strong and durable. It’s also very esthetic in appearance.

Teeth restored with Porcelain look just like real teeth. We also find that these crowns are much stronger than the older type of crowns which fused porcelain to metal.

Can Onlays Replace mercury Fillings?

Porcelain onlays are a great way to replace large amalgam restorations that contain mercury.   An onlay is a more conservative option than preparing a tooth for a crown because less tooth structure is removed when getting a tooth ready for an onlay.  Onlays are tooth color and look much better than the silver fillings which they can replace

How Long Do Inlays and Onlays Last?

The average lifespan of an inlay or onlay can range between 5 to 15 years.  There are many factors that can affect the life span of an onlay on your tooth.  How well one maintains their oral hygiene is very important to prevent possible cavities under the onlay.  Routine dental visits are important every 6 months to evaluate the health of the underlying tooth which has an onlay.
