Evolution of Digital Charts and X-rays

Dentistry has been evolving alongside with advances in technology for the past two decades at a rapid pace.  Long gone are paper charts cluttering the office.  Small cumbersome film X-rays that dentists used to develop with toxic chemicals are gone as well.  Currently all patients’ office records are stored in the cloud.   Dental records can be pulled up within seconds from any PC with an internet connection in a secure network with just a correct username and login info.  X-rays are digital as well, so they just magically appear in seconds right in front of us as the network pulls them from our on-site server.   Turning the office to digital from a paper office saves a lot of precious time, labor, and also improves the quality of dentistry we can perform.  X-rays appear on a large LCD screen rather than a tiny piece of film that degrades over time.

Fully Digital Dental Office

The final step to transform a dental office to being fully digital is eliminating the impressions dentists take.  Patients usually dislike impression material in their mouth.  There are also many steps from the impression to pouring stone models in the lab which can incorporate errors causing the dental work not to fit properly.

Digital Impressions are more Accurate

With a digital machine, we can scan patients’ teeth with a small camera inside of their mouth.  The scans are extremely accurate, it’s almost impossible for a trained dentist to scan a patient inaccurately.  The computer then sends the scanned images directly to the lab via the internet.  Our lab can then print 3D models of the patient’s teeth.  These scans can be used to make Invisalign aligners, Retainers, Night guards, porcelain crowns, onlays and veneers.   The lab produces much higher quality work than with traditional impressions because the digital scan is more accurate.

Digital Dentistry is faster & Better

Digital dentistry arrives in the lab within 15 minutes of being scanned in patient’s mouth.  Previously a delivery service would take 1-3 days to deliver the impressions to the dental lab depending on the location of the lab.  Now every scan could be delivered to a lab within minutes to anywhere in the world.
