You may already know, the skin of red grapes contains antioxidants which can repair damage done to your body’s cells by free radicals. Consuming antioxidants can lower your chances of developing heart disease and cancer. But, did you know wine also has cavity-fighting benefits?
For anyone searching for another reason to enjoy a glass of red wine, a new study claims that red wine could help prevent cavities. The study found that red wine, as well as grape seed extract, could potentially help prevent cavities. Tooth cavities require dental fillings or if left untreated can create painful dental emergencies.
Previous research has suggested that polyphenols, grape seed extract and wine can slow bacterial growth, so Moreno-Arribas’ team decided to test them under realistic conditions for the first time. They grew cultures of bacteria responsible for dental diseases. Afterwards, they dipped the cultures for a couple of minutes in different liquids. Red wine with or without alcohol and wine with grape seed extract were the most effective at getting rid of the bacteria.
Although red wine has cavity fighting effects, it will stain your teeth. In-office teeth whitening treatment is recommended for frequent wine drinkers to keep their smile looking youthful and white. Routine dental check-ups and cleanings are recommended every six months to keep your teeth free of cavities.
